Find a Better Job Using Pierson's Highly Effective Job Search Method
In 2006, I came across a book written by Orville Pierson: The Unwritten Rules of the Highly Effective Job Search (HEJS). Though I did not realize it at the time, reading this book would mark one of those ah-ha moments in my life.
At the time, I recall thinking that the length of my job search was increasing at an alarming rate. Early in my career, I would make a call to a contact and have a new job offer in a matter of weeks. It appeared that searching for a new job opportunity was requiring significantly more time, effort, and energy.
In 2001, I was stuck in a job search for well over a year. Fast forward to 2007: As I was soon to graduate with a freshly minted business degree, the time had come for me to scrap my current job search approach for something better.
That better approach is Pierson's Highly Effective Job Search method. Developed by Orville Pierson and made publicly available in 2006, Pierson's HEJS was a key job search tool provided to over one million private clients of Lee Hecht Harrison, a leading global career services firm.
It was October 2006, when I my first used the Pierson job search method. Eight weeks later, in the first week January 2007, I received and accepted a new job offer. Had I found the effective job search strategy that I was seeking?
Soon after beginning my new job, I shared Pierson's approach with a colleague who was struggling with a year-long job search. After applying what she had read in the first few chapters of the book, she landed an interview with a hiring manager and accepted a new position she had found using the Pierson method.
