Cycling Tampa's Beautiful Cypress Point Park
There's nothing quite like rising out of bed at sunrise on a Friday morning, knowing that in a couple of hours you'll be cycling along a scenic paved trail lined by beautiful mature trees, surrounded by plenty of open space with access to a small beach area that provides a picturesque view of Tampa Bay.
Tampa's Cypress Point Park, rated 4/5 stars and awarded TripAdvisor's Certificate of Excellence, was my chosen destination for a early morning ride one Friday morning. Open sunrise to sunset, this public park is well known by locals for its stunning sunsets, beach walks, wildflowers, abundant sea birds, pavilions with BBQs, and opportunity for fishing. Park amenities include a bus stop, plenty of parking, ADA accessibility, disc golf, sand volleyball court, bike racks, benches, a boardwalk, and a canoe launch.
A Google Maps check of the park's location was all I really needed to find my way to this popular city park. Just a couple of miles south of Tampa International Airport, the park runs adjacent to a small business park. Plenty of parking is available, a plus during lunchtime break when local employees head to the park for a picnic or post-lunch walk.
Most of the people I met during my visit to the park were outgoing and friendly. Arriving at the park, I had a nice chat with a metal detector hobbyist who was heading to the beach area for a morning search for treasure. Shortly after unloading my trike from the car, a man with his young grandson walked over to my car and help me resolve an issue with my bike's rear derailleur. In the first ten minutes of my ride, I met an elderly couple from Jamaica who told be what to expect as a new Tampa resident.
According the City of Tampa's website, Cypress Point Park has just under a mile of paved asphalt trail, with about a half-mile of unpaved scenic nature trails. I found the paved trail excellent for my morning outing. Best of all, its possible to exit the park and ride a short distance to the start of the Courtney Campbell Trail, a scenic paved trail which spans Tampa Bay.
I enjoyed my first visit to Cypress Point Park and am planning a return visit in the near future to enjoy more of what this park has to offer.
