JIRA Core and Agile/Scrum: A Powerful Combination for Business Project Management

In Choosing the Best Group Calendar Solution for JIRA Core Cloud, I discussed two add-on Confluence calendar applications and an approach that would integrate a Teamup web calendar with a Confluence page.

Let's suppose that the need for a team calendaring solution was being driven by business stakeholders. These stakeholders want to initiate a research and development project to determine and document needs (business requirements) while facilitating discussion around management and operational issues. Based on documented requirements and management decisions made during the course of discussing what's needed, the goal is to select the best team calendaring solution that best meets the needs of business stakeholders and is a fit for the organization's management and operational framework.

Could we apply Agile project management principles and a Scrum framework within a JIRA Core customized Project to manage a business research and development project, that would enable the selection, configuration and go-live launch of a calendar solution for a business team? Could we then use the same JIRA Core customized project to manage ongoing changes (configuration management) to the production team calendar solution?

While a spreadsheet approach using a customized Agile spreadsheet to capture business Epics and User Stories could be used to document business stakeholders team calendaring needs, this is not the best approach when working a project in collaboration with a research and development team.

The limitations of using a customized spreadsheet to guide a business stakeholder project focused on researching, developing, testing, launching, and ongoing configuration management of a customized calendar software application will become painfully apparent as the project progresses.

What if we created a custom JIRA Core Business Project that would capture team calendaring business requirements, with the goal of selecting the best team calendar solution? Could we use the same customized JIRA Core Project to configure, test, and launch the calendar application via a series of production build and release cycles? Could the customized Project be updated to serve as a configuration management tool to manage changes to our production team calendaring application?

In Creating a Business Epic in JIRA Core, we'll explore how JIRA Core and a Agile/Scrum mindset was applied using a customized JIRA Core Project to configure a production-ready team calendaring solution.
